A well-bred Cocker Spaniel is a joy to own. Gentle and loving, this beautiful creature wants nothing more than to please his master. Cockers are small dogs, fitting comfortably into a car, apartment, or a small home. They are, by nature, companion animals, but are frequently trained for the show ring, and for obedience, agility, and for field work. They make wonderful therapy dogs, too.

Socialization

Socialization, this is something that must be started as a puppy, and continued for the rest of their lives. How you want them to respond to different situations and noise’s, depends on the you the owner…

What I do before they go home!!!

I start the puppy on socializing from their first day. The first 10 days, their eyes are still shut, so we holding them close, petting, kissing, and talking to them. I put the babies in our living area’s in the house. Letting them get comfortable with the sounds of family life. Sounds like the TV, radio, vacuum, other dogs, and everyday life. Letting them know that we are going to be there for them.

By two and a half weeks, my boys, their friends and my friends are playing, cuddling, and talking to them throughout the day.

By three weeks, we are outside with them playing, and starting potty training outside (potty training will be discussed later).

At week four until they go home, the puppies are playing, with the parents, and all my other Cockers, inside and outside. This time is important, because my other Cockers teach the puppies a little doggie manners.

When you take your new family member home…

It is very important to spend as much time as possible with your Cocker Spaniel. Cocker Spaniels love to be around people all the time. They are very people oriented. They thrive with attention.

Just remember, being beautiful requires some work. Cocker Spaniel hair grows like crazy… You will have to give you baby a hair cut every other month, and brush him/her regularly. If you don’t, your beautiful baby could look like a monster within 6 months. By washing and brushing you Cocker Spaniel weekly, you will reduce the hair loss cleanup. If you would like to learn how to cut your Cocker Spaniel’s hair, I will explain or show you.

Potty Training

Cleaning up after accidents are upsetting. But your baby doesn’t know that going potty, in the house, on your new carpet, couch, or even your bed. It is your job to teach him/her to go outside (or use potty pads) to potty… Don’t expect to be able to have your baby trained in a day. It is a training process, that requires dedication, patience, love, praise, and clean-up. Main thing is don’t teach your baby not to pee in the house. You want to teach him/her to go pee outside or on potty pads if you have to… First you must determine where you want them to go potty. Then start taking him/her to that spot every couple hours or at peak times for them to go.

Peak Times to Potty.

  1. Before any indoor playtime.
  2. After Nap time.
  3. After they eat.
  4. If Crate training, when you take him/her out of crate.
  5. Any time your babies whines or cries. Just in case…

If possible make it where the dog can get outside on his/her own. A doggy door or a bell by the door, will make this process easier. ×

The kennel must only be big enough for them as sleep in. A dog will not potty in a place where they sleep, as long as they can hold it. If they do,you need to take them out more often, if you are at work, see if someone can stop by to let them go potty. If the kennel is to big. Place a cardboard box in the back to fill the space necessary to make the space small enough to work.

Always, Take your puppy outside on a leash, until they know where they have to go. Remember to praise your baby when he/she does a good job. But when accident happens point it out and gently tell them NO….Never, never, never hit you puppy, this is your best friend right.

Toys and chews

Having toys all over the house, is not a bad thing. Cocker Spaniels puppies will chew on everything. They don’t know what they can and can’t chew on until you tell them. The toys will reduce the chance of the babies chewing on stuff you don’t want them to,when your back is turned. When you catch them chewing on something they are not supposed to be. Look at him/her sternly tell them no and give them a toy or chew toy to chew on. But make sure you are praising more than scolding. Having a wide variety of chew toys and toys will help you find out what your baby likes. From rawhides to plush squeaky toy to tennis balls (I prefer to buy racket balls, they last longer). Tennis ball or racket balls are a must. Teaching your puppy to play fetch is a great time with your Cocker Spaniel. At first, if they don’t just naturally fetch the ball, start out throwing the ball only a few feet. Play for a while, constantly praising him/her for bringing it back to you. Then continue getting farther, and farther away… This is great exercise for your Cocker Spaniel.

Food

I personally feed my babies Iam’s dry dog food. It is a good quality food for them. I have found the cheaper dog food the dogs eat more just to get the proper nutrition they need, and they go potty more. I don’t fed at certain time’s. I leave a big bowl of food, and water out, they will eat all day on this a not over eat. Only do this with dry dog food. No table scraps or can food.
